Open excavation often means damaged surfaces, traffic disruption and costly reinstatement. Horizontal directional drilling (HDD / HVU) installs pipes and protective conduits along a controlled path underground — with less impact on asphalt, paving and green areas.

When to use HDD

  • When asphalt, paving or green areas must be preserved
  • Near existing networks that need a controlled bore path

HDD / HVU process

The sequence is indicative — route data and ground conditions determine how the approach is adjusted on each job.

  1. Site assessment and route data check

  2. Planning entry/exit points and identifying obstacles

  3. Pilot bore (controlled underground trajectory)

  4. Reaming/enlargement and preparation for pull-back

  5. Pipe or protective conduit pull-in

  6. Handover of the result (as required by the project)

Technical constraints

  • Practical limits up to about 700 mm diameter, 25 m depth and 450 m per bore — depending on ground and geometry.
  • Actual capability depends on soil, pipe material, diameter, access and permits.
  • Every job is assessed individually — there is no one identical process for every site.
  • For more complex routes, we may plan in stages depending on the object.

  • What is horizontal directional drilling?

    Trenchless technology installs utilities with most of the route remaining underground — without a continuous open trench. Our primary method is horizontal directional drilling (HDD / HVU).

  • Is caurdure / HVU the same as HDD?

    Yes. “Caurdure” is a common field term for the same technology, often referred to in projects as HVU or HDD.

  • What can you usually install with HDD?

    Typically — pipes and protective conduits for water, sewer and gas, as well as electrical and telecom protective conduits where minimal surface impact matters.

  • How do you confirm if HDD is suitable for a site?

    We assess route parameters (length, diameter, obstacles), access to entry/exit points and ground conditions. Based on that, we recommend a solution or an alternative approach.
